Health and Active group
The key component of the Healthy and Active Group was physical activities for healthy mind, body and social wellbeing. The group integrated a healthy lifestyle program, health prevention and education and a self management framework to encourage behaviour change and promote health and well-being, with a particular focus on group members with chronic disease, or at risk of chronic disease or with mental health problems. The grant received helped the group purchase some DVDs for exercise and ABS machine for exercising. The group expressed their gratitude for help given by Self help Queensland
The activities were done in the northern and southern suburbs and everyone was welcomed to participate. Physical Activity education sessions were also delivered to the members to increase their understanding on different types of physical activity, safety tips, benefit for body, mind and management of illness including stress and mental health.
The Healthy and Active group aspired towards strengthened support and connections within the group for example they share their stories, difficulties, ideas, prayers and physical activity. The group participated in Living Well education sessions including physical activities. This activities delivered significant shifts in attitudes and behaviours from negative to positive, the women feel safe and less stressed as before. Feedback from the members who participated in the activities was overwhelmingly positive. Despite the short time frame, many had implemented immediate changes in both socialization and exercise and reported marked improvements in fitness, health and wellbeing.
Nevertheless the exposure to culturally appropriate physical activity programs and the benefits derived from participation has, at the very least, increased understanding of the link between exercise and health, delivered transferable skills, and increased the member’s confidence in trying new things. Member’s capacity was further enhanced through the social connectedness the activities offered participants, often isolated due to loneliness, personal circumstances or cultural customs. Relationships were strengthened at community levels. The members were able to use the facilities without payment of any fee at any suitable times with them. However they have made a commitment to contribute some little amount for sustainability of the group.
We have a balance of $ 500.00 which will be used for getting together social recreation activities on the 28th/October/ 2011 at Mt. Maleny.
